Eurozone headline annual inflation jumped to 3.3% in August 2026, up significantly from 2.9% in July, according to the flash estimate released today by Eurostat.

The surge was driven almost entirely by skyrocketing energy prices stemming from the ongoing conflict in Iran, which pushed the energy component up to 14.3%. Conversely, underlying price pressures showed signs of easing; core inflation slowed to 2.4% (down from 2.5%), and services inflation dropped to 3.0%. This mixed data has solidified market expectations that the European Central Bank (ECB) will raise interest rates by 25 basis points at its meeting on September 10, bringing key rates to 2.5%.
