The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) released today its Direct Investment by Country and Industry, 2025 report. The metrics reflect a multi-billion-dollar expansion in both outbound U.S. investment and incoming foreign direct investment (FDI). 

🇺🇸 U.S. Direct Investment Abroad (Outbound) 

The cumulative position of U.S. direct investment abroad increased by $438.1 billion to a total of $7.14 trillion at the end of 2025. 

• Top Host Countries: Key destinations for U.S. capital include the United Kingdom ($1,114.7 billion), the Netherlands ($1,044.0 billion), and Luxembourg ($645.3 billion). 
• Industry Breakdown: Holding companies (45.8%) dominate by foreign affiliate industry, while manufacturing leads by U.S. parent industry (50.2%). 
• Income: U.S. multinational enterprises earned $660.1 billion in income from foreign assets, marking an 11.1% increase from 2024. 

🌐 Foreign Direct Investment in the U.S. (Inbound)

The cumulative position of foreign direct investment in the U.S. grew by $266.0 billion to $5.86 trillion. 

• Top Investing Nations: Japan leads with a total position of $827.1 billion, followed by Canada ($819.8 billion) and Germany ($706.2 billion). 
• Key Sectors: Investment is concentrated in manufacturing ($2.51 trillion, or 42.8%), with chemical manufacturing representing $835.9 billion. 
• Income: Foreign multinationals earned $310.1 billion on U.S. assets, a 1.9% decrease from 2024.
