U.S. retail sales rose a resilient 7.19% year-over-year in May, fueled by a steady job market despite macro headwinds from high gasoline prices and geopolitical tensions.

According to the newly released CNBC/NRF Retail Monitor, consumer demand held strong as core sales (which exclude auto dealers and gas stations) increased 0.42% month-over-month on a seasonally adjusted basis.

Note: The U.S. Census Bureau is scheduled to release its official government Advance Monthly Retail Sales report tomorrow, June 17, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. EDT.

📈 Major Category Performance (Month-over-Month)

  • Clothing & Accessories: Rose 0.60%, showing solid momentum heading into summer.
  • Grocery & Beverage: Increased 0.48%, reflecting elevated underlying costs for essentials.
  • Health & Personal Care: Gained 0.45% over the previous month.
  • General Merchandise: Edged up 0.41%, aligned with strong grocery traffic.

🛒 Key Consumer Trends

  • Gasoline Prioritization: High energy costs heavily dictated consumer habits. Drivers frequently capped fuel purchases at 10 gallons or less per stop.
  • Year-to-Date Growth: Total retail sales are tracking 6.29% higher for the first five months of the year compared to the same period last year.
